2023 TJAAG
Future STEM Leaders
Award Results

Congratulations to Vivian Gao, a senior at TJ, and Charlotte Witzel, a junior at West Springfield High School, for winning the TJAAG Future STEM Leaders Award, a $1,000 scholarship for each student!

We are excited to share some highlights from the winners' application essays on Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility (DEIA) in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) so you can hear them in their own words.

Vivian Gao:

“Just like me, millions of girls and women across the globe remain underrepresented in STEM...However, women offer a different and unique perspective in the STEM workforce, so steps should be taken to reduce the gender gap.”

“Volunteering has taught me the importance of understanding what others around me need, instead of what I need. DEIA is extremely important, and steps should be taken so that there is more diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility in all communities.”

“DEIA is extremely beneficial because it allows for creative and innovative solutions to problems...DEIA also allows for different perspectives, allowing teams to develop effective strategies and solutions. It is clear that DEIA has many positive advantages.”

Charlotte Witzel:

“Just as humans brought about climate change, humans must also work to stop climate change...By improving STEM education and promoting DEIA, the STEM community will gain more bright, innovative minds and foster the teamwork needed to end climate change."

“I had always envisioned engineering as a bunch of men in hard yellow hats building some sort of machinery...Dr. Elizabeth Wayne helped me realize that women are intelligent, strong, and just as capable as men in the STEM industry.”

“I am a young, mixed-race woman, and it is crucial that my culture, my background, and my needs are acknowledged and represented in STEM. It is my dream to become a biomedical engineer, but without DEIA my dream would have been shattered immediately.”
