Committees

Research & Analysis

It is important that our work towards an equitable and inclusive TJ be grounded in analysis and sound data. This committee analyzes the current situation and alternatives to ensure that our proposed solutions are effective and based on solid data.

Mentorship & Preparation

Although it should not be used as an excuse not to reform the admissions process and culture at TJ, we recognize that TJ is part of a larger systemic issue where under-represented groups of students in FCPS are subject to discrepancies in preparedness, mentorship, education, and resources. Our goal is for TJ Alumni and current students to create meaningful and lasting change through strengthening current STEM outreach programs in FCPS, to help empower and enrich students from underrepresented groups throughout FCPS.

Applicant Engagement & Outreach

This committee works to increase communications and engagement of potential applicants to TJHSST, in order to increase access and support for students from under-represented groups throughout the admissions process. You reach the Applicant Engagement group at graduadostj@gmail.com. We also appreciate any suggestions on how to get the word out about TJ or invitations to collaborate!

Admissions Process

This committee proposes improvements to the TJHSST admissions process itself, including the test and how it is administered, associated fees, and other factors to ensure that the admissions process for TJ measures merit and not privilege or wealth.

Culture of Inclusivity & Accountability at TJ

Alumni have the perspective and wisdom of their experiences post-TJ to reflect on their high school experience, the unnecessary challenges it may have placed on students from under-represented groups, and the ways in which diversity could have contributed to an enhanced education for all students. This committee works to improve the TJHSST experience and promote a culture of inclusivity and accountability at TJHSST that creates a better experience and education for all students.

Reimagining STEM Education

Research repeatedly demonstrates diverse teams and approaches integrating the social sciences are key for collaborative STEM problem-solving needed in our world today. This committee cultivates deeper learning through a more holistic, interdisciplinary, and culturally responsive approach that develops the STEM-educated global citizen—not only the scientist within—who is prepared to address the problems of tomorrow with expanded future career pathways.

Pressure for Change

TJ’s problem with equity and inclusion has been an intractable one for decades. This committee conveys the urgency of this issue to amplify pressure for positive change by engaging through social media, contacting press and media outlets, and assisting with presentations to the school board and other key stakeholders.
